Seamless rain gutters in Austin: installation and replacement

Why seamless
A seamless gutter is formed on site from one coil of aluminum, so each run is a single piece from corner to corner. The sectional gutters sold in ten-foot lengths at the home center have a seam every ten feet, and every seam is a future leak. Seamless gutters Austin crews form on the truck cost only slightly more in material, and the labor is the same, so there's no good reason to hang sectional on a house you plan to keep.
Sizing for Austin
Most gutter installs here go wrong at this step. The 5-inch K-style gutter with 2x3 downspouts was designed for steady, moderate rain. Austin gets its 34 inches in bursts, and a burst is what a gutter has to survive. We calculate roof area per downspout and use:
- 5-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts on most single-story homes. The larger downspout alone roughly doubles outlet capacity for a few dollars more.
- 6-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts on two-story homes, metal roofs, steep pitches, and any run under a roof valley. Six-inch carries about 40% more water.
- A downspout at least every 35 feet. A single downspout on a 60-foot back run is the most common overflow we see on 2000s two-stories in Circle C and Avery Ranch.
Metal roofs
Newer Austin builds and most Hill Country custom homes have standing-seam metal. Water leaves a metal roof faster than it leaves shingles and tends to shoot past a gutter hung at the usual height. We set gutters on metal roofs slightly lower and further forward, use fascia-mounted hidden hangers rather than anything that screws through the panels, and go to 6-inch on most of them. If your metal roof already has gutters that seem to miss the water, that's fixable without replacing the roof.
Materials and colors
Aluminum in .032 gauge, heavier than the .027 most crews use, in more than 25 baked-on colors to match your trim or the roof. Homes that never had gutters
This is the Austin job. Whole subdivisions from the 1980s through the 2000s were built with a drip edge and nothing else. The signs: a trench in the mulch under the eave, dirt splashed up the brick, a patio that floods at one corner, a limestone slope that has washed down to bare rock, or a foundation company telling you to fix drainage first. Installation day
The crew arrives with the coil and the forming machine. Old gutters come down first, fascia is checked and any soft board replaced, then each run is measured and formed on the driveway to the exact wall length. Corners are sealed with polyurethane, downspouts strapped every eight feet, extensions set, and we run water through every run before we pack up. Most homes are done between 8 a.m. and mid-afternoon. How long does gutter installation take in Austin?
Most homes are done in one day. We measure and quote on the first visit, the coil color is confirmed, and the crew forms the gutters on site on install day. Big two-story homes on steep lots in Westlake or Lakeway occasionally run into a second morning, and we'll say so in advance.
Should I get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?
Six-inch on two-story homes, metal roofs, steep pitches and any run under a valley; five-inch with 3x4 downspouts on most single-story roofs. We calculate it from the roof area feeding each run. Undersizing is the reason so many Austin gutters overflow in a storm, and it costs about 20% more to avoid.
Do new gutters come with a warranty?
The aluminum carries a manufacturer's finish warranty of 20 years or more against peeling and chalking. Our workmanship on leaks, pitch and hangers is covered for the first year, and we come back and adjust after the first few big storms if anything needs it.
Can you install gutters on a house with exposed rafter tails?
Yes. Older homes in Hyde Park, Clarksville and Travis Heights often have no fascia board. We use roof-strap hangers under the shingles or install a fascia first, depending on the roof edge, and price both on the estimate.
