Three rules that cover most of it.

We look before we quote. Every estimate is done from a ladder, checking the fascia and where each downspout ends up, not from the driveway with a tape. The price you get is the price you pay unless we find rot we couldn't have seen, and then you see it before we touch it.

We size for Austin. Thirty-four inches a year sounds mild. Three inches in an hour on a May afternoon is what the gutter has to survive. That means 3x4 downspouts as standard, 6-inch gutters where the roof calls for them, gutters hung for metal roofs where the house has one, and the downspouts extended or drained on every job, because the cheapest foundation work is a gutter that puts water where it belongs.

We tell you when you don't need us. If a $180 reseal fixes it, that's the job. If the gutters have five good years left, we'll say so and see you then. If your yard has two young trees, we'll talk you out of guards.

What to expect from any gutter company in Austin

There are plenty of gutter contractors Austin homeowners can call, and the good ones work about the same way. Whoever you hire, us included, you should get:

• A written estimate with line items: gutter size and gauge, hanger type, downspout size and count, fascia per foot, guards per foot, haul-away, drainage
• Proof of insurance before the crew arrives, not after
• Someone who checks the fascia and the drainage, not just the gutter
• Downspout extensions included rather than sold as an add-on
• A water test before they leave
• No today-only price. Aluminum costs the same on Thursday as it did on Tuesday

If you're looking for the best gutter company Austin has, that list is the test. Any outfit that passes it will do a good job. Any outfit that fails two of those points will hang the gutters you'll be replacing in eight years.

Licensing and insurance in Texas

Texas does not license gutter contractors. There's no state board for it, no registration, no number to look up, which means anyone with a truck and a ladder can call themselves one. That's not a reason to worry; it's a reason to ask a different question. Ask for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We email ours before the crew arrives. A contractor who won't produce one is telling you who pays if a ladder goes through your window or someone falls off your roof. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes plain guidance on checking a contractor's coverage, written for roofing after storms and just as useful for gutters.

What we don't do

We don't do roofing, foundation repair or painting. We'll point out a roof problem when we see one from the ladder, and you can take that to a roofer. We don't sell guards to people whose trees don't justify them, and we don't take a deposit on repairs.
